Akar Subur 2024

sebuah kuliah-persembahan / A performance Lecture

Celebrate the richness and evolution of traditional Malay dance. This year’s performance showcases the talents of emerging choreographers from various esteemed Malay dance circles, including Era Dance Theatre Limited, Azpirasi Dance Group, Perkumpulan Seni, Permata Seni, and ArtisteArtSeni.

The theme of “Akar Subur” translates to “Fertile Roots,” symbolizing the nurturing of new creative talents grounded in the deep and vibrant traditions of Malay dance. This year, the focus is on the “Instinctive Bond” (“Ikatan Naluri”) that ties the dancers to their cultural heritage. Each budding choreographer, having undergone intensive mentorship, presents two unique pieces, resulting in a total of ten new dance works for the show. The first piece is a new creation inspired by traditional Malay dance, weaving together time-honoured movements with fresh, contemporary interpretations. The second piece is a solo work, allowing each choreographer to express their individual artistic voice and vision.

Audiences can expect a mesmerizing blend of rhythmic patterns, intricate footwork, and expressive storytelling, all underpinned by the cultural richness of Malay heritage. The performance not only honours the traditions of Malay dance but also breathes new life into it, ensuring its relevance and resonance for future generations. From the dynamic ensemble pieces to the deeply personal solos, “Akar Subur” promises an evening of captivating performances that celebrate the past, present, and future of Malay dance, through the “Instinctive Bond” that connects the dancers to their roots.
